When both members of a couple are affected by a sterility problem, or if a woman does not have a male partner, a feasible option is to use embryo donation.
These cryopreserved embryos usually come from IVF or ICSI couples that have remaining embryos after their pregnancy and authorize their donation to other couples. In some other cases, these embryos come from egg and sperm donors; thus, the embryos transferred are fresh. There are some other cases of couples or single women that receive eggs and fertilize them with sperm donor achieving in vitro embryos.
The intention is to prepare the endometrium in which the embryo will be transferred through the administration of oral medication or patches.
To prove that the endometrium has the adequate characteristics, some ultrasounds will be carried out depending on the individual characteristics of each patient.
The next step is to implant the embryos in the maternal uterus. This painless procedure is performed in the operating room. Consequently, no anesthesia is required.
An abdominal ultrasound control is performed, enabling the mother to follow visually the entire process. The embryo(s) will be deposited in the uterine cavity using a cannula that does not affect the endometrium.
After a resting period, the patient can go home to resume her normal life until the scheduled date for the pregnancy test.
Thanks to this technique, a 90 of % gestation rate is achieved after two cycles of fresh embryos.
